Volume II, Issue I, July 2011, "The Enablers" - Job security – A concept irrelevant in today’s age

Dear Friends,

The Enablers, the e-publication for the first-line managers of the pharmaceutical industry, is now into its second year. With great pleasure, I present you Volume II, Issue I, July 2011.

Life for a first-line manager has become tough and very mechanical. There is hardly any time for self-development. As a result, many first-line managers are unknowingly regressing towards incompetence. They feel that they may not be able to accomplish any task given to them and there is only one direction for them in their organization and that is down and out.

Insecurity now moves stealthily. This causes negative feelings to overshadow your true worth. How do you change your insecure feelings? Take a moment to ask yourself what you can do to improve in the area you are not confident about. How can you overcome this feeling of insecurity and lead a happy life, both professionally and personally.

You often become debilitated socially. There is only one solution to this – self-development and striving towards excellence.

Read this issue and feel free to share your opinion.

Job security – A concept irrelevant in today’s age

The previous two articles were related to attrition and how to reduce it. Let us now change direction and take a peek at job security. The classical definition of job-security is “Assurance that an employee has the continuity of gainful employment for his/her work life.”

The term ‘job-security’ is archaic. First-line managers instead of being concerned about job-security should invest time in becoming ‘the most valuable employee’ of his organization, via self-development. Do not be comfortable with what you are doing now, work towards excellence. Identify your strengths and weaknesses. Work on your strengths and use it to your advantage. Know your weaknesses and inadequacies and do your best to improve on them.  First-line managers, who are able to utilize their strengths effectively, will achieve great things in their careers and will have no time think on ‘job security’.

How do you develop yourself towards excellence in your job? Excellence is a journey and not a destination. As long as you live, continuously upgrade yourself and move towards excellence in your job functions. Or else, you may head towards obsolescence and that is where the feeling of insecurity starts creeping in. Self-improvement is a battle, a continuous struggle to rise above mediocrity. When you excel, you can do anything you want to do, can be anything you want to be. Self improvement does not happen in a flash. It requires a change in attitude, willingness and capability to face problems. Build up an agenda for your own self-development and work towards becoming indispensable to your organization.
The first point in the agenda for self-development is to become responsible for your own improvement. Since you are the architect of your own life, you are 100% responsible for your own future! Aspire to excel in your current job.  Read books and attend programs on self-development. This will give you self-confidence, self-esteem and inner stability. What you do today will determine your readiness for tomorrow. Knowing that knowledge is power will lead you towards unlocking your concealed talent and abilities. You will be able to take reins of your future and control your destiny.

The second point in the agenda is to make use of the Law of Attraction. This law is based on like attracts like. The Law of Attraction says that all your thoughts, all images in your mind, and all the feelings connected to your thoughts will later manifest as your reality. It also means that everything you have in your life today has been attracted to you through your mind. If you want the law of attraction to work for you, you must believe in the principle of like attracts like! Your thoughts, beliefs and actions will attract corresponding positive and negative experiences. Let me give you an example here. If you want to become the Vice-President of your organization, you must first believe that becoming a Vice-President is possible for you. Then start developing yourself towards achieving this goal. You will one day become the Vice-President or even the CEO! A quote generally attributed to Henry Ford says it all: "Whether you think you can or cannot, you are right."
The third step in your agenda is to take charge of your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind is your great partner in self-development.  It will do anything you tell it to do and will deliver exactly what you ask for.   Once you know how to communicate with your subconscious mind you can direct it to create what you want. Joseph Murphy says: “An excellent way to get acquainted with the two functions of your mind is to look upon your own mind as a garden. You are a gardener, and you are planting seeds (thoughts) in your subconscious mind all day long, based on your habitual thinking. As you sow in your subconscious mind, so shall you reap in your body and environment!” Be a good gardener of your mind. Plant and nurture those plants that will say that “I shall become the most valuable employee of the company” You will then involuntarily work towards your self-development and eventually become the ‘most valuable employee of the company’!
Another important step in your agenda to feel secure is to take care of your health. A healthy mind will reside in a healthy body. You may be very competent, but obesity and poor health can ruin all the skills you have acquired. At the end of the day you may not get your promotion and you may feel insecure.
To conclude, you as a first-line manager should become so good in your current job and remain healthy that your own company will bend over backward to retain you. Your competitors will chase you with job offers. This is your ultimate job security!
